Smart mobility solutions are one of the most tangible ways to make citizens lives easier. In Tampere, Finland, these solutions are being developed in a vast scale and alongside major city development projects. For example, Tampere is utilizing real time traffic data, open data, positioning and robotics. 5G mobile network is being built. Tampere will be presenting its smart mobility solutions and testing platform possibilities at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona November 14th-16th 2017.

The City of Tampere in Finland is developing fast and has secured next to 10 Billion Euros worth of investments for the next ten years in multiple different projects like, for example, the tramway, multipurpose arena and a new sustainable city district Hiedanranta. These, alongside with smart city development projects and new infrastructure will create a top testing platform in Europe for smart mobility.

The backbone of smart public transportation in Tampere will be the tramway running through the city by 2021. The busiest points along the tramway will be created into mobility hubs that will have robotic bus feeder traffic for the tram, informative tram stops, and both physical and digital services that create smooth-running everyday life. The scale of the change in the way people move in Tampere and the way they use services is vast and Tampere is looking for companies to test and create solutions for the future. 5G ready mobile network, built by Elisa Oyj will be ready by April 2018.

One of the tools boosting the innovation and test platform functions in the city is the EU funded STARDUST project where e-vehicles, public e-charging, e-parking and the so called “last-mile” solutions are developed with advanced European cities and citizens of Pamplona (ES) and Trento (IT) and with the associated follower cities of Cluj (Romania) Derry (UK), Kozani (GR) and Litomerice (Czech Rebulic).

The City Guidance Ecosystem is another EU funded project seeking testing partners in Tampere. It develops the guiding of people and large crowds in city centres according to their needs, preferences, and user-profiles. Digitalized guidance provides a platform for companies, travel agencies and event organizers for better availability.

“In Tampere we have exceptionally versatile know-how in the field of mobility and our ability to innovate is outstanding. We have built automatically moving machinery for over 20 years and since then we’ve specialized in IoT, connectivity and service design. We’ve managed to take the pieces of the mobile phone industry and turn those pieces into more new companies and innovations than we first thought was possible”, says Tero Blomqvist, the Smart Tampere Program Director from the City of Tampere.

In addition to product development and testing possibilities Tampere stand at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona will showcase three companies and their smart city solutions. Globeon uses bluetooth beacons in positioning, Infotripla shows how real time traffic data makes use of cost-effective urban traffic management, and is used to support drivers on their daily trips, and Citynomadi visualises information and interactivity on maps indoors and outdoors.

You can find the Tampere stand and its hosts, Smart Tampere Program and Business Tampere, at the Nordic Pavilion (Hall B2, Street E, Stand 509) in Smart City Expo World Congress.

Smart Tampere is a strategic program by the City of Tampere, Finland, in which new smart city solutions are developed in ecosystems. Smart Mobility being one of them. The ecosystems consist of companies, universities, research and development organizations, public entities, citizens, and organizations. Business Tampere is the Tampere Region economic development agency promoting Tampere business opportunities globally.
