Smart cities and their services are built on wireless connections and effective data use. Cities are currently investing in various sensor technologies and looking into the potential of applying the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance their services.
The 6Aika Future operator independent data integration platform (City IoT) project invites companies to join the specification of the open data integration platform for cities and to develop new business models enabled by the platform. The open IoT interface will break down supplier-specific silos and enable the full utilization of data input from different sources. The pilot environments offer companies the opportunity to present their expertise and develop their products.
The project will end in summer 2020. For further information on the City IoT project, see the project website: cityiot.fi

Specification of system interface requirements
When a company participates in the specification process for interface requirements, the requirements of the company’s own IoT solutions and available technologies will be worked into the process. An open interface enables small companies to offer their own solutions as part of a larger entity.
IoT piloting environment
New IoT solutions can be tested and developed in real urban environments. The pilot environments to be built in Tampere and Oulu are available to businesses for testing sensor technologies, network solutions and their own products, for example.
The 6Aika network spreads knowledge to new cities
Coordinated by the University of Oulu, 6Aika City IoT is a joint project between the cities of Oulu and Tampere. In Tampere, the project is implemented by the City of Tampere and Tampere University[t3] . In Oulu, the project participants include the university, the City of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
