Agile experiments to promote the well-being of children and young people

The current exceptional situation and distance learning pose challenges to the well-being of children and young people. City of Tampere wants to react agilely to the situation and develop solutions that support well-being together with students and companies on a fast schedule. The related call for experiment ideas is expected to open in April.

In these exceptional circumstances due covid-19 virus, the need for solutions that support the well-being of children and young people is emphasized. However, there is a need for these solutions even after the situation has returned back to normal. Monitoring, promoting, and selfhelping your own health and well-being are new kinds of skills that future adults will need.

The city wants to react agilely to the situation and develop solutions that support well-being together with students and companies on a fast schedule. The aim is for children and young people to be able to influence the definition and promotion of their own health and well-being.

The challenges for companies are shaped on the basis of material produced by children and young people, says Planning Manager Mika Vuori from the City of Tampere.

For example, data collected from 4th and 9th graders’ influence days can be used as material. Also ideas gained through participatory budgeting process can be taken into account. Children and young people will also be involved in the development of the selected solutions through concrete experiments to be carried out later.

The call for agile experiments is scheduled to open later in April. The call for applications will be published in HILMA and Smart Tampere channels.

Bringing the city, its citizens, companies and communities together is at the heart of Tampere’s strategy. As a result of the joint development in the Smart Tampere program, more than 50 different solutions have already been made. Methods vary, but unifying factors can be seen: opening up challenges for companies and communities to solve, and having a goal of creating better solutions to the needs of the city or its citizens. The solutions have been, among other things, technological solutions and service concepts that streamline everyday life.
