Future smart city solutions to be tested in Tampere starting in January

hervanta pilot area testing innovation platform tampere
Hervanta pilot area covers the Tampere Technical University and the Police University College as well as the future feeding traffic route (L1) for the upcoming tramway.

The City of Tampere and the Smart Tampere program offer companies a network built in Hervanta by Nokia Oyj. The goal is to create services and solutions for a smart city.

Companies can test and develop smart city services and products from January onwards in a cloud based network that is built in Hervanta city district. City of Tampere and its Smart Tampere program will offer enterprises the network built by Nokia in order to co-create new services and solutions with the city, with the educational and research organizations and with other companies, that scale to other smart cities around the world. The project lasts for three years.

The network covers areas like Tampere Technical University and the Police University College as well as largely the center of Hervanta. The network has been built to cover the tramway route and its surroundings, where feeder traffic with robot vehicles is planned to run in 2021. In addition to the traffic solutions, the network enables the development of solutions for any aspect of life, for example, garbage logistics, education, residential areas, health and security.

The testing and innovation platform built in cooperation with Nokia is an element of the city’s goal to create new business opportunities for companies through ecosystem thinking, and to offer citizens an improved everyday life through better services.

– The testing platform built in Hervanta is a concrete example, how the city can support business and at the same time improve services for residents. The city is above all an enabler and a partner. This also coincides with our number one target which is improving the employment situation, says the Mayor of the City of Tampere, Lauri Lyly.

– To offer the community and people innovative solutions that serve them in the best possible way, it is essential for us to collaborate closely with representatives from many different organizations and businesses. We look forward to joint development work with the Smart Tampere Ecosystem participants, says Stephan Litjens, VP – Nokia Digital Automation and Nokia Incubator.

Smart Tampere is the strategic development program of Tampere city for 2017-2021, of which the target is to steer Tampere towards an internationally recognized smart city through cooperation with public actors, educations institutions, organizations and community members.
